Abstract

In this talk planktonic members of two studied systems will be presented: Jellyfish and fish larvae from the Baltic Sea and young fishes from smelt and alewife in the Elbe Estuary.

The Baltic Sea is an inland sea with limited water exchange to the Atlantic, a pronounced salinity gradient from 18‰ in the southwest to 3 ‰ in the northeast and a high degree of anthropogenic nutrient inflow (eutrophication) in recent decades.

A major decline in cod fisheries but also herring catches is observed especially within the last years.

The Elbe Estuary is the 140 km lasting stretch of the Elbe River before entering the North Sea. It is influenced by the tide and comprises a salinity gradient from freshwater via oligohaline (0.5-5‰) to polyhaline (18-30‰) conditions. As needed for new generations of containerships to reach the Port of Hamburg, dredging activities deepened the Elbe channel from naturally ca. 10ft. to over 45ft. at present.

A decline of smelt as a key stone species is observed in the Elbe Estuary over the last years.

We studied the contents of essential ω3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids of these members of the plankton community from both systems. ω3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids, and especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are of major importance for the development, reproduction and growth of fish and many zooplankton species and may be used as an ecosystem state variable.
