주제: Surface Engineering: Controlling Surface Enrichment of Cations in Complex Oxides towards Carbon-Neutral Society


Surface enrichment of certain cations in complex oxides system (e.g., segregation, ex-solution) critically influences the activity and durability of various electrochemical and chemical reactions. However, their fundamental origins and control strategies remain incompletely understood. In this work, we systematically elucidate the thermodynamic driving forces, mechanisms, and material design principles governing surface cation enrichment, and demonstrate their implications for energy and environmental applications.

Specifically, we show that (i) lattice strain engineering (tensile vs. compressive) and B-site doping of perovskites effectively suppress Ba surface segregation in Ba-based solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes while enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity; (ii) integrated particle ex-solution and phosphorization yields metal phosphide nanoparticles that significantly improve hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. 

Overall, these studies demonstrate that thermodynamics-guided surface and bulk engineering of complex oxides provide a valuable framework for designing high-performance materials for chemical and electrochemical devices, offering a viable materials pathway toward a carbon-neutral society.
